Tens of billions of dollars in gold flows illegally out of Africa each year, a new report says
A new report has found that billions of dollars in gold is smuggled out of Africa each year and most of it ends up in the United Arab Emirates, where it is refined and sold to customers around the world
Billons of dollars in gold is smuggled out of Africa each year and most of it ends up in the United Arab Emirates, where it is refined and sold to customers around the world, according to a report published Thursday.
Over $30 billion worth of gold, or more than 435 metric tons, was smuggled out of the continent in 2022, according to the report published by Swissaid, an aid and development group based in Switzerland. The main destinations for African gold were the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Switzerland.
The authors of the report said their goal was to make the trade in African gold more transparent and put pressure on industry players to do more to make gold supplies traceable and supply chains more responsible.
"We hope that this will improve the living conditions of local populations and the working conditions of artisanal miners throughout Africa,” Yvan Schulz, one of the report's authors, told The Associated Press.
The report compared export data from African countries with import data from non-African countries, along with other calculations, to extrapolate the data. Among its recommendations, it called on African states to take steps to formalize artisanal and small scale mining and reinforce border controls. It also called on non-African states to publish the identity of the countries of origin and the countries of dispatch of imported gold, and to work with authorities to identify illicit gold flows.

Apple on Monday released a preview version of its big new iPhone update.
The iOS 18 public preview is a beta version of the software that will launch alongside new iPhones this fall, allowing Apple fans and developers to test the newest features before they officially launch and identify bugs before all iPhone users install the new software.
This year, however, the most important new service isn't in the public beta: Apple Intelligence. In June, Apple announced that some of its newer devices would be able to access Apple's AI service that can answer questions intelligently, control your iPhone, and even generate images.
Apple said that Apple Intelligence will be released in a beta version this fall and users will be able to try it out this summer. Some of the promised Apple Intelligence features, such as ChatGPT integration, and some Siri improvements, aren't expected to be released until later this year.
However, there are still many changes in this version of iOS that will change the way that iPhones look and feel and could surprise users when they first install the software. Apple has updated several of the core user interface elements of the device, including the lock screen, home screen, and Control Center to support a wider range of colors and customization.
Top apps such as Photos have been redesigned. Messages is more colorful and supports emoji reactions. Users can even change all their app icons to the same color.
Many of these look-and-feel features have been available to Android users for years, but they will be new to longtime iPhone users and are part of a multiyear process in which Apple is opening up the formerly rigid iPhone software design to greater visual customization, after last year's release redesigned the device's lock screen.

Here are some of the big changes in iOS 18:
- Users can now put icons anywhere on the home screen — for example, you can put all your apps around the border of the screen so you can see your wallpaper better.
- App icons can be changed to dark mode, or iOS can change all your app icons to the same color.
- Apple's Control Center menu — accessed by swiping down from the upper right corner — is more customizable, with several pages of screens, and offers new types of controls.
- Users can swap out the camera and flashlight shortcuts on the lock screen for other apps.
- Apple's Photos app is getting a big update with a redesign. Now, the app uses AI to organize photos into trips or albums, which are on the first page when the app is opened up.
- Apple's Messages app can now add bold or italics to text. Users can also react to messages with any emoji. These so-called "tapbacks" now display in color in the Messages app.

- iOS 18 users with recent devices can send texts via a satellite if there's no Wi-Fi or cell service.
- Safari will summarize news and other web articles, including generating tables of contents. These features are accessed using the button on the left side of the URL bar in Safari.
- Apple's put all of its password management features into a new app, Passwords.
- Users can tap an iPhone against another iPhone to quickly transfer digital money.
- iPhones can now generate transcripts from calls or recordings.
- The Siri animation now takes over the entire iPhone screen.

Here's how to download the beta:
- Make sure your phone can run the latest software. It will need to have been released in 2018 or later.
- Update to the latest public version of iOS.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Select the iOS 18 public beta from the dropdown menu.
NDC has achieved more than NPP in the 4th Republic Ghana– National Chairman brags
The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress party (NDC)Mr.Ofosu Ampofo, has touted the achievements of the party, describing it as the most enduring and successful party in the fourth Republic of Ghana.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo stated that the NDC is proud of its accomplishments over the past 30 years, citing the numerous infrastructure projects and policies the party introduced while in power.
He cited National Identification Programme and the introduction of thermal plants since the construction of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams as the party's notable achievements.
All other expansion of the energy mix has been spearheaded by the NDC to the extent that when the NPP came to power, they were complaining that we had more power than is needed..,” he pointed out.
Touching on health facilities, Mr. Ampofo said “all the Regional Hospitals in the country can be attributed to the handiwork of the NDC.” “The Regional Hospital in Cape Coast, Ho Regional Hospital, Sunyani, Koforidua, Tamale Regional Hospitals etc.”
On education, he mentioned that the NDC built all of the Polytechnics and ensured that they were converted into universities. He also asserted that there were only three public universities in the country when the NDC took office but added more.“Talk about the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, talk about the University of Energy and Natural Resources, University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya, and then every tertiary institution the NDC is credited with it.”
If NPP breaks the eight, Ghana will collapse - NDC UK/Ireland Chapter former chairman
In an exclusive interview on Joy Prime's Prime Morning show on Wednesday, Alhaji Alhassan Mbalba, former chairman of the UK/Ireland Chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized the party's flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his inability to make firm decisions in governance.
Mbalba stated that Ghanaians have suffered over the past eight years under the leadership of the NPP, which has also affected those living abroad. He added that despite Dr. Bawumia's claims of being an economist, he has failed to address the situation and has not fulfilled many promises made in 2016 and 2020. He can't even pinpoint most of the things they promised us
Mbalba argued that the NPP's failure to resolve the country's economic crisis demonstrates Dr. Bawumia's lack of economic expertise. He questioned Dr. Bawumia's credentials as an economic expert, citing the poor performance of the cedi against foreign currencies as evidence. He said “Today, where is the relationship between the cedi and foreign currencies? The cedis that he claimed he arrested, who granted bail to that cedi? Today $1 is to GH14.00.
